Re-buy and add-on tournamentsAs you already know in poker you can find different types of tournaments: guaranteed, regular, sit and go, steps, satellites and so on. Although these tournaments are different they can have similar features like re-buy and add-on.

Re-buy as you probably guessed, gives to a player the chance to get back in the tournament. Usually the re-buy is equal to the buy-in of the tournament and after re-buy you get the initial stack of chips.
Add-on allows a player to increase his stack of chips during the tournament. The add-on cost is the same as the buy-in and in most cases the stack of add-on chips is bigger than on re-buy. In some tournaments add-on is accepted only if you have fewer chips than the initial stack.

Steps tournaments

Steps tournamentsSteps or phase tournaments are primarily sit and go tournaments that serve as a satellite for a larger tournament. Usually main poker rooms offer steps tournaments for big money prizes or packages on big events like the Main Event of the World Series of Poker. Playing in steps tournaments you can turn a small amount of money invested in the first step into a large prize working your way up to the last step.

Steps tournaments are based on a tiered system. This means that if you end up in the first places you will receive a ticket to the next step. If you place in the middle you can get a ticket to repeat the phase or to return to previous steps. If you end up on the last places you are out of the tournament but usually you can reenter at any step if you buy in directly with cash. The more advanced is the step you want to enter the more expensive the buy in will be.

Guaranteed tournaments

Guaranteed tournaments

The poker game has various tournament types and one of the most attractive is the guaranteed tournament.

The guaranteed poker tournament has a minimum prize pool so the players have the certitude of winning at least the designated amount of money regardless the number of players registered.

On regular tournaments the size of the prize pool is determined by the number of players registered to the tournament and the buy-in. For example in a 10 players regular tournament with $5.00 + $0.50 buy-in, the prize pool is 10 x $5.00 = $50.00.

In a $10,000 guaranteed tournament with $100 + $9 buy-in and maximum 2,000 runners the minimum prize pool of $10,000 will be divided to the winners no matter the number of the runners. So if the tournament has only 20 players registered they have more chance to win the same money prizes and if the tournament has 2,000 players registered then the prize pool to be divided is 2,000 x $100 = $200,000.
