Since the televisions started to run different poker shows like “High Stakes Poker”, “World Poker Tour” and “World Series of Poker”, many unknown poker players emerged from the shadows.
Poker is now one of the most popular games worldwide, and the best poker players are now famous all over the world. For many young and famous poker players the internet was the first step into this incredible world of poker legends.
That was also the case for Peter Eastgate. Born in December 1985 in Denmark, Eastgate had his fist contact with poker during school. Few years later he dropped out of Aarhus University to follow a full time career as professional poker player. He played a lot of online poker at different poker rooms and managed to qualify to the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event from an online tournament at one of these major poker sites. Eastgate entered the final table and ended up heads-up against Ivan Demidov. After a two-day final table game that last more than 15 hours, Eastgate defeated Demidov with a five high straight. At the age of 22, Eastgate became the youngest ever WSOP Main Event winner. Besides the WSOP bracelet, he won a total prize of $9,152,416. After his huge success at the 2008 WSOP Eastgate played at the highest level for another year and cashed a lot of money from several international tournaments. Eastgate reached a total of $11,311,881 only from poker, currently being the fourth among the top money winners. In 2010, just before the WSOP, Eastgate announced that he retires from poker. He stated that his only objective as a poker player was to gain his financial independence. He already reached that goal and has no intention to dedicate his life to the game of poker. His announcement shocked the whole world and many thought it’s not true. The time passed and Eastgate really returned in the shadow, disappearing from the shining world of poker. Some say that in few years we will see him back in the game, but only time will tell if that’s really going to happen. |
