In the past, the game of poker was mainly played by men, the women being only observers or lucky charms. With so few female poker players actually playing, the number of famous female winners in important poker tournaments was very small. In the recent decades things started to slowly change a more and more women discovered the magic of poker.
The poker tournaments or poker shows broadcasted by important television channels brought the game of poker in the spotlight attracting so many players, men and women. On the other side, the incredible growth of online poker industry also created an opportunity for women to get in touch with the game and to practice their skills.
At this point there are 14 female poker players that earned more than one million dollars from poker. The top ten female poker players by their official poker earnings are: 1. Annette Obrestad, Sandnes, Norway, age 22: one WSOP bracelet and $3,031,989; 4. Vanessa Rousso, Las Vegas, United States, age 28: $2,980,325; 5. Jennifer Harman Traniello, Las Vegas, United States, age 46: two WSOP bracelets, $2,537,840 6. Joanne "JJ" Liu, Las Vegas, United States, age 45: $2,304,762 7. Annie Duke, Los Angeles, United States, age 45: one WSOP bracelet and $2,157,246; 8. Liv Boeree, East Molesy, United Kingdom, age 26: $2,107,987; 9. Sandra Naujoks, Berlin, Germany, age 29: $1,798,403; 10. Mimi Tran, Torrance, United States, age 50: $1,499,683. The number one player by earnings is Daniel Negreanu with more than $14 millions so it seems that for now the men are by far the best poker players. Yet in a very short time we might see women competing side by side with men in the top ten as some ladies in their twenties already started to make millions out of poker. |
