River strategyOn the Texas Holdem poker game the flop and the turn cards offer to all active players the chance to improve their hand. Once the river card is drawn the best hand is set but winner is still undecided. The player with the best hand is not necessarily the winner. Usually a better strategy wins over better cards especially on high stakes. On lower stakes players call and go all in very easy and a showdown with three or four players is very common. So on low stakes the cards are more important but on higher stakes a good strategy can decide the hand’s winner.

The river is on the board, you have all community cards, so you can analyze the strength of your hand. You can find yourself in three situations: you can have a poor hand (you missed a hand), you can have a medium hand or you can have a strong hand (possibly the best).

If you missed a hand like a straight draw and have now just a poor hand with no chances of winning a showdown, you might be tempted to try a bluff. If it’s a loose low limit Holdem it’s not a good idea because almost every time someone will call you and wins your pot. On the other hand if you are in a high stakes Holdem and played your hand well you have the chance on winning the bluff. Commonly on high stakes players have a tight game and call just if they think to have the best hand on the table.

If after the river you hold a reasonable hand like a high pair and the community cards don’t suggest that your opponents could hold something stronger, you should bet, especially if you are the first. This strategy is recommended for medium and high stakes poker games and can be used to take the pot.

A strong hand must be played on the river by betting a significant amount. If it’s a low stakes game and you want to raise the pot this is the best way to do that. On higher stakes players will play tighter and call just with strong hands. If there are three of a kind, a straight or a flush on the table you should consider that other players can have a strong hand just like you even with a higher kicker. In this situation is recommended to call if is a small bet. A big bet to call on high stakes can suggest that the player has a strong hand and even if you call with good cards you might get a bad beat. Bad beat happens all the time in online poker and major poker rooms like Carbon Poker even offer a huge Bad Beat Jackpot to soften the loss and transform your cards into the best hand ever.
