The Grand Slam tennis tournaments are ones of the most important sport events each year. This simple but skill requiring sport became very popular since 1968 when the “Open Era” started allowing professionals and amateurs to compete side by side.
As the competitions became more attractive, the popularity grew and the earnings followed the trend. Now, looking back at the last century of tennis, we cannot miss some extraordinary tennis records and the legends that wrote the history of this exceptional sport.
Most Grand Slam singles titles won (men): 1. Roger Federer (Switzerland) - 16 titles from 2003 to 2010; 2. Pete Sampras (United States) - 14 titles from 1990 to 2002; 3. Roy Emerson (Australia) - 12 titles from 1961 to 1967; 4. Rod Laver (Australia) - 11 titles from 1960 to 1969; 5. Bjorn Borg (Sweden) - 11 titles from 1974 to 1981.
Most Grand Slam singles titles won (women): 1. Margaret Court (Australia) - 24 titles from 1960 to 1973; 2. Steffi Graf (Germany) - 22 titles from 1987 to 1999; 3. Helen Wills (United States) - 19 titles from 1923 to 1938; 4. Chris Evert (United States) - 18 titles from 1974 to 1986; 5. Martina Navratilova (Czechoslovakia and United States) 18 titles from 1978 to 1990;
Winners of all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year: 1. Rod Laver (Australia) - 1962 and 1969; 2. Don Budge (United States) – 1938; 3. Maureen Connolly (United States) – 1953; 4. Margaret Court (Australia) – 1970; 5. Steffi Graf (Germany) – 1988.
