The ladies’ singles final was expected to be an intense one being another Williams vs. Williams game. It was the fourth all-Williams title match at Wimbledon and second in a row after the last year’s final when Venus won the title. After the destruction of Safina in the semifinal and five times winner in Wimbledon, Venus was considered favorite on the final against Serena who won just two times. Serena managed to win the game in two sets: 7-6 and 6-2. Now Serena owns ten Grand Slam Singles titles. Just few hours after the Singles Final Williams sisters played the Doubles Final against Austrian players Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubs. After two sets, 7-6, 6-4, Williams sisters won Doubles Final at Wimbledon for the 4th time. Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjici (Serbia) won the Gentlemen's Doubles Final against Americans Bob and Mile Bryana in four sets 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 and 6-3. Before the Wimbledon start the most expected match was a final between Andy Murray and Roger Federer. Andy Murray’s ambition to win at home was trusted by his English fans who wagered tenth million pound at bookmakers. But Murray failed to fulfill the expectations and lost the semifinal against the American Andy Roddick. The third Wimbledon final having Andy Roddick and Roger Federer fighting for the crown lasted four hours and a half. Both players didn’t want to give up without a good fight so the last set of the match extended to 95 minutes and ended 16-14 in favor of Federer bringing him the Grand Slam title. The final set was the longest in any Grand Slam final ever and the 77 games match was the longest men’s Grand Slam final in history. The final score is 7-5,6-7, 6-7, 6-3, 14-16. Winning Wimbledon 2009 Roger Federer won his sixth Wimbledon title and the fifteenth Grand Slam surpassing Pete Sampras’s record of fourteenth Grand Salm titles. This victory also brings Roger Federer back on the top as ATP’s number one tennis player. More on rankings and statistics you ca find on ATP official site. |

This year’s Wimbledon had a premiere: the first game in Centre Court played with the roof closed. Centre Court was build in 1922 and on the 29th June 2009 on the Dinara Safina vs. Amelie Mauresmo game its new roof closed for the first time on an official Wimbledon game. The retractable roof is made from a special material called Tenara and stretches 16 meters above the court. It takes 10 minutes for the roof to be fully closed and another 30 minutes for the air management system to make optimum conditions for players and spectators.
